By one measure, Alphabet-controlled Isomorphic Labs would tower over every company on this list. The AI drug discovery company has raised $2.7 billion in external financing, including a $2.1 billion Series B announced in May. Its corporate structure, however, puts it outside our definition of an independent biotech startup: Alphabet still controls at least 75% of its shares and voting rights. That leaves the top spot to Rakuten Medical, which has raised more than $809 million in disclosed private funding, with $100 million in an oversubscribed Series F in January, and remains independent under our majority-ownership test.
Earendil Labs and NewLimit round out the top three slots in the ranking below, which is limited to private biotechs that announced or disclosed financing between Jan. 1 and Aug. 12, 2026. Earendil reported $787 million in financing in March to expand its AI-driven R&D platform and advance a pipeline of antibodies and other biologics. Earlier this year, Earendil entered into a pact with Sanofi potentially worth up to $2.56 billion. While Earendil is focused on protein therapeutics R&D, NewLimit is investigating longevity medicines based on epigenetic reprogramming, an approach aimed at restoring more youthful function in aged cells. Its $435 million Series C announced in June brought its cumulative haul to approximately $760 million. The company, which aims to “radically extend human lifespan” as its tagline asserts, counts Founders Fund, Khosla Ventures and Kleiner Perkins among its backers.

Beyond the top three, the largest hauls went to Chai Discovery and LifeMine Therapeutics. The AI drug discovery firm Chai closed a $400 million Series C in July, its third round in under a year, bringing its total to roughly $630 million on the strength of its computer-aided molecular design technology. The company has struck deals with Lilly, Pfizer and Novartis. LifeMine, a fungal-genomics drug discovery company, has raised $558 million while building a platform that mines fungal genomes for drug-like molecules. Its $188 million Series E in August drew backing from Bezos Expeditions, Gates Frontier and RA Capital alongside existing investors including GSK and GV. The financing will help advance LIFE-001, an experimental immunosuppressant slated for a Phase 2 kidney transplant study.
Protein work is another theme with 19 of the 50 companies developing antibodies, multispecifics, ADCs, peptides or degraders, accounting for $6.3 billion, or 42% of the capital in the ranking. Protein-directed medicine is thus the largest modality segment in the list with a considerable lead over genetic medicines at 11 companies and $3.5 billion.
Given the broader rush of AI-focused VC capital, AI-native companies are a thin slice of this list. Four of the 50 put AI at the center of the pitch, and they account for $1.96 billion, or 13% of the capital.
Radiopharmaceuticals were another key area winning funding with $934 million across three companies: AdvanCell’s $315 million Series D, Full-Life Technologies at roughly $254 million cumulative and Ratio Therapeutics’ $70 million Series C.
The full ranking below tracks the 50 private biotechs that met our 2026 funding screen, along with their cumulative equity, latest financing, therapeutic focus and development stage.

How the figures were derived
- 1 Approximate. The cumulative total is reconstructed from primary disclosures across multiple rounds and should be read as an estimate, not a company-stated figure.
- 2 Documented floor. The company has disclosed at least this much equity. Undisclosed rounds mean the true total is higher, so the rank is conservative.
- 3 Approximate floor. Both conditions above apply: the figure is reconstructed and it is a minimum.
- 4 Rakuten Medical. Reconstructed from a documented round chain running from the 2016 Series B through the January 2026 Series F. The Series F added $70M in new equity alongside $30M in converted notes, which are tracked separately and excluded from the total.
- 5 Earendil Labs. Company-stated total with no per-round breakdown.
- 6 Orca Bio. The Series E and F closed before 2026 and were disclosed during the year, which is what qualifies the company for this ranking.
- 7 Beacon Therapeutics. Built on a company-stated prior total of approximately $290M plus a Series C described only as more than $75M.
- 8 Oricell Therapeutics. Floor taken from a stated cumulative pre-IPO financing figure of more than $110M. The company was pursuing a listing and remained private at the August 12 cutoff.
- 9 Full-Life Technologies. A further $40M of announced capital sits outside the counted equity and is excluded here.
- 10 Retro Biosciences. Initial capital of $180M is documented. A 2026 close was confirmed without an amount, so the true total is higher.
- 11 Korsana Biosciences. The rounds closed in 2024 and 2025 and were disclosed in 2026, which is what qualifies the company for this ranking.
- 12 Vaderis Therapeutics. The 2020 Series A is stated as more than CHF 18M, and published USD conversions range from about $18.8M to more than $22M. The Series B is $152M in the company release and $152.5M in the lead investor release. The rank holds across every combination.
- 13 CORXEL. The January 2026 financing was announced as a package of up to $287M. Only $7.5M is individually documented, so that amount plus $162M of prior Series D capital sets the floor. Series B and C totals remain undisclosed.
- 14 Sidewinder Therapeutics. The company states that the $137M Series B brought its total to $162M, implying a $25M Series A from sole prior backer OrbiMed.
Figures reflect cumulative disclosed private equity through Aug. 12, 2026, for privately held biotechs that announced or disclosed a private financing between Jan. 1 and Aug. 12, 2026. Debt, grants, licensing and collaboration payments are excluded. Unmarked figures are exact company-stated totals or the sum of a fully documented round chain.
