After Abbott Laboratories spun out AbbVie in 2013, the North Chicago–based firm has cemented its reputation as a pharma heavyweight. AbbVie bolstered its standing in the market with the 2020 acquisition of Botox maker Allergan. Now, AbbVie is among the five largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. The immunosuppressive drug Humira is currently the best-selling pharmaceutical on the market. While sales of the drug dipped slightly in 2019, Humira sales increased 3.5% last year to $20.39 billion, making up approximately 43% of the company's total net revenues last year. While the decline of Humira sales is a possibility in coming years, Abbvie is hopeful that the rheumatoid arthritis treatment Rinvoq and plaque psoriasis drug Skyrizi can help fuel future growth. In terms of its COVID-19 response, AbbVie is perhaps less visible than some of its peers. Still, it is testing some of its products in the National Institutes of Health–backed Accelerating COVID-19 Therapeutic Interventions and Vaccines (ACTIV) research program. –BB
