J&J’s pharma division Janssen had a strong year in 2021, with sales increasing to $52.1 billion from a previous $45.6 billion in 2020. Tremfya sales growth was especially brisk, increasing 82.8%, while L-12/IL-23 inhibitor Stelara (ustekinumab) grew at 5.1%. The Titusville, N.J.–based business that became part of Johnson & Johnson in 1961 is investigating inflammatory pathways to develop biologics that could address a range of immune-mediated diseases. The strategy has already paid dividends with Stelara, which, in 2016, won FDA approval for moderately to severely active Crohn’s disease. In 2019, the drug won an indication for moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis. FDA first approved Stelara as a psoriasis therapy in 2009. Other prominent drugs in the company's portfolio include Darzalex, Erleada and Imbruvica. Janssen's parent Johnson & Johnson is looking to strengthen its focus on drug development and medical devices by making its consumer health business a separate entity by November 2023. —BB
