The American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) has named Patrick J. Sinko, Ph.D., R.Ph., as chief science officer. Sinko will set the organization’s scientific strategy, guide scientific programming across in-person and digital platforms, and guide the direction of AAPS’s portfolio of peer-reviewed journals.
Sinko, a pharmacist and pharmaceutical scientist, retains his academic appointment at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, where he is a distinguished professor and the Parke-Davis Endowed Chair in Pharmaceutics and Drug Delivery at the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy. He joined Rutgers in 1991 and served as the university’s associate vice president for research from 2007 to 2018. He is a former AAPS president and has been a member since 1986, the year the association was founded. Outside academia, he co-founded NaviCyte, an absorption-screening company that Trega Biosciences acquired in 1998, and Theraport Biosciences, serving as CSO of both.
Sinko has edited Martin’s Physical Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences since its fifth edition and is editor-in-chief of Pharmaceutics (MDPI). According to his AAPS biography, he has authored or co-authored more than 475 publications, including research papers, abstracts and book chapters, and has trained roughly 110 students and postdocs. The biography also reports more than 30 years of continuous NIH and industry funding for his lab, which focuses on biopharmaceutics, pharmaceutical formulations and drug delivery. His honors include NIH FIRST and MERIT awards and the Rutgers Board of Trustees Award for Excellence in Research, and he is an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, AAPS, the Controlled Release Society and the National Academy of Inventors.
“AAPS has long been the intellectual home for pharmaceutical scientists across academia, industry, and regulatory agencies,” Sinko said. “I am honored to step into the Chief Science Officer role to help shape our scientific vision, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and deliver cutting-edge programming and publications that address the most urgent challenges in drug discovery and development.”
AAPS, a nonprofit association of more than 7,000 scientists and professionals, will hold its 2026 PharmSci 360 meeting Oct. 25–28 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans.
