Best known for its scientific instrumentation, reagents and consumables, Thermo Fisher increased its standing as a contract research organization with the April 2021 acquisition of PPD for $17.4 billion. PPD was involved in developing Moderna'a COVID-19 vaccine and Gilead’s COVID-19 drug remdesivir. The PPD acquisition could complement Thermo Fisher's Patheon contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) division.
