John Oliver, the host of HBO’s Last Week Tonight, is no stranger to criticizing the pharmaceutical industry with segments on the opioid epidemic and marketing practices targeting physicians.
This week, however, the comedian took a different route by arguing in support of vaccinations after a re-emergence of people advocating that these injections are linked to autism.
Oliver touched upon how these views have been amplified by people, including President Trump, who has theorized about the alleged dangers of these vaccines in forums like Twitter and Presidential debates, while skepticism over these treatments have led to recent public health crises like a measles outbreak in Minnesota.
He finished the segment on a personal note. After arguing that the benefits of these medical breakthroughs far outweigh any perceived risks he noted him and his wife plan on vaccinating his infant son on schedule despite a premature birth and certain health difficulties.
