In Johnson & Johnson’s (NYSE:JNJ) Phase 3 trial for the Ad26.COV2.S COVID-19 vaccine, six vaccine recipients developed tinnitus or ringing in the ears.
In five of those individuals, tinnitus had either resolved or was resolving. The condition was unresolved in the other trial volunteer.
No placebo recipients developed the condition.
J&J concluded that the tinnitus reports were likely unrelated to the vaccine. FDAt could not rule out a possible link between the vaccine and the condition, according to Yosefa Hefter, a medical officer within FDA’s Division of Vaccines and Related Products Applications. The principal investigator in the trial that two of the events were related and the remainder unrelated.
J&J subsidiary Janssen has not observed tinnitus linked to other versions of its AdVac vaccine, according to Johan Van Hoof, global therapeutic area head of vaccines for Janssen.
A 21-year-old volunteer involved in a Phase 1 trial for the J&J vaccine developed tinnitus and sudden hearing loss 34 days after receiving the vaccine. The patient recovered 69 days after receiving the injection. Johnson & Johnson also determined that the event was unrelated to the vaccine.
In all, some 43,783 volunteers participated in the Phase 3 trial. A total of 19,630 participants received the Ad26.COV2.S vaccine. Only 0.03% of vaccine recipients reported tinnitus after inoculation, and those who did tended to have underlying medical conditions that are risk factors for the condition.

In a briefing document, FDA concluded that the data did not necessarily support a causal link between the tinnitus reports and the vaccine.
All six participants had at least one possible risk factor for tinnitus, including hypertension, hypothyroidism, depression, prior history of tinnitus, allergic rhinitis and medicine use.
Tinnitus events were not mentioned in FDA briefing documents on the vaccines from Moderna (NSDQ:MRNA) and Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) and BioNTech (NSDQ:BNTX).
COVID-19 itself could also induce or worsen tinnitus, according to a study published in Frontiers in Public Health.
An International Journal of Audiology study found that close to 15% of hospitalized COVID-19 patients reported hearing loss eight weeks after being discharged.
Tinnitus is often linked to hearing loss.
Stress associated with the pandemic could also exacerbate tinnitus.
Additionally, some viral infections can cause sensorineural hearing loss. Some live attenuated vaccines have been reported to cause hearing impairment and tinnitus.
Almost 50 million people in the U.S. have the condition, according to the American Tinnitus Association.

After 2nd Moderna vaccination have ringing in my ears. Tinnitus! Never had it prior to 2nd vaccination.
Ray,
My husband is experiencing the exact same thing! He is miserable. I’m wondering how many others are having the same issues. He is getting an MRI on Tuesday as it’s been terrible and has had no relief. Has yours subsided? He never had any issues until his second vaccination.
Your husband is not alone . Is he doing any better. I am suffering from tinnitus now because of the 1st moderna vaccine
I also have had ringing in my ears with the first shot of Mondera, i don’t think i’m going to get the second shot, i’m afraid it will make it worse.
Exactly the same here. I got tinnitus 21 days after 1st dose of Moderna. I rescheduled the 2nd shot so I can see an ear doctor first.
I had ringing in my ear two weeks after my 1st dose of Pfizer. Initially it was a nightmare. The last few days it has been easing up. Been taking a B complex vitamin and a lot of praying. All said, I am NOT getting the 2nd dose because I also am afraid that it will get worse.
I just got my 2nd covid shot 3 weeks ago and 15 hrs after lost my hearing with severe vertigo was put on Prednisone hearing came back but not 100% and still have vertigo going to make appointment with a neurologist next
No, your husband is not alone. I developed tinnitus in my right ear starting less than 24 hours after my first Pfizer vaccine on March 11. It is still there. My hearing, which was disgustingly acute before the vaccine, is about 25% effective now. It hasn’t improved at all. My second dose is due on April 1st. I’m really uncertain how to proceed, as my pulmonary risks are so high for the virus. I wake up each morning thinking it’s better. Then I turn off the white noise machine in my bedroom and my “whoosh” is still there. The good news is that I’m able to sleep ONLY because the white noise machine helps mask what is going on in my right ear. Best of luck.
Make sure your husband invests in very good earplugs for MRI. Many people’s tinnitus gets a lot worse after MRI because of the noise.
I’m 8 weeks after the Pfizer vaccine and it still hasn’t subsided. Started a few hours after the vaccine for me. Never had tinnitus before.
I developed tinnitus in my left ear 1 week after the first pfizer shot. I had it again in the past after a course of amoxil-flagyl antibiotics for a tooth infection. It took a few years to go away. I found the use of earplugs soothing. Protecting the ears from stimuli seemed to work for me. I am sure this time it will pass also, but i m not taking the second jab. Too risky for me to worsen the humming. I advise patience and not panicking. We can learn to live with it. And by the time we have learned, then it is usually gone already.
Thanks for sharing, Conzar. There’s been some studies (albeit with small numbers of patients) that link tinnitus severity with stress-related brain patterns. One from 2015 (https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0144419), for instance, did so but it only involved 32 participants. Your conclusions here are in a similar vein.
The only things I’ve seen mentioning tinnitus in the context of a COVID-19 vaccine are the documents referenced in this article about the J&J vaccine. I’m seeing a growing number of people here and also in the U.S. VAERS database that reported tinnitus following vaccination with the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. Am working on getting an ENT’s perspective on the subject.
Hi Brian – Please let me know if you find any additional information as my husband has lost complete hearing in his left ear four days after getting the first Pfizer shot. He’s been to ENT and they put him on steroids and suggested an MRI. I can’t seem to let go the notion that it could be related to the vaccine. Any information you could provide would be appreciated!
Kelly
Hi Kelly,
Sorry to hear about your husband.
I reached out to one ENT a few weeks back and have his responses posted here: https://www.drugdiscoverytrends.com/no-clear-link-between-covid-19-vaccines-and-sudden-hearing-loss/
There have been some isolated reports regarding sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL) following immunization, but one analysis from 2016 didn’t find a link between such hearing loss and vaccination:
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27026733/
To date, VAERS is one of the best sources for examining vaccine adverse events. To date, there are no reports of SSHL for the J&J vaccine. The percentage of VAERS entries citing SSHL is between 0.03% and 0.04%.
It may also be worth checking with other ENTs and asking if they are noticing any relevant trends here.
I received my second Pfizer shot in my left arm on February 19. On March 14, I developed tinnitus in my left ear. It is the first time I’ve ever had tinnitus, and it sounds like I am swimming at the bottom of my pool. My hearing is affected, and I hope that it goes away soon.
I am experiencing the same thing too after my 2nd shot of Moderna. Never have problem from Tinnitus before
Hey there I am so sorry to hear that. I have had tinnitus on and off for a year and it came back immediately the night I received the j and j vaccine. I figured out the root cause of mine which came from having a fever that night and my neck tightening up. Things to try that have helped me: cold shower for 30 seconds, massage c1,c2 on back of neck, neck stretches, meditation, eating blueberries. Crazy thing about tinnitus if not caused by hearing loss is the more you think about it the worse it gets. That in itself made me realize it was also a side effect of stress. Keep a positive attitude and force a smile as much as you can as that can fool your mind to destress for a bit. Hope any of this helps.
Do you think getting the COVID-19 vaccine could make my tinnitus worse I also have morbid hearing lose in my left ear and some hearing lose in my right ear I also have hyperacusis in my left ear
I have tinnitus after receiving Pfizer 2nd dose vaccine a few days ago. I can’t hear out of my right ear now. Never had a problem like this before. Where do I go for help??
Hi Rita,
Would recommend going to an ENT to get a check-up and start there. In many cases, tinnitus improves over time and can be exacerbated by stress and lack of sleep, so take good care of yourself.
Thank you for the encouraging words and for this forum. Since recently receiving my J&J vaccine on April 7, I’ve also experienced a continuous loud ringing noise in my ears which I had not had prior to getting the vaccine. After not being able to sleep due to loud ringing in my ears, I visited an Urgent Care…my blood pressure and ears look normal, but was recommended to see an ENT. I found that swimming, taking a shower, riding in a car with music on, and being out and about with background noises helps muffle the ringing in my ears. Also, my sleep improved last night by listening to an app of calming sounds. I reported my reaction to VAERS. Hope it gets better for us all! Any information on how to get help for this is appreciated. I’ll update, as well.
I got my vaccine 5 days ago. It was the Pfizer vaccine. I have had a slight fever aches and chills with nausea. I was told it’s not uncommon and was told it was a good sign the vaccine is working. But last night I had a headache and took some excedrine migraine medicine.
When you went to bed and had some ringing in my ears. In the morning I woke up and have lost my hearing in my right ear. I’m scared and don’t know what to should do. Have you got any help?
Hi Dane,
Would definitely get checked out by an ENT.
I have Ménière’s disease so I have a tendency to have transient mild hearing loss, but 7 days after the first Pfizer vaccine I had sudden hearing loss in both ears with intense ringing. It peaked at days 10-13 then slowly subsided. Got second Pfizer shot and it happened again but much worse, exactly 7 days after. Today is D15 and it continues to worsen. I am thinking of taking a leave of absence from work. Steroids, diuretics and special tinnitus meds are all not working. Very scared.
I received the second Pfizer vaccine on February 14th and woke up the next day with Tinnitus in my right ear. I have no memory of having Tinnitus in the past and did not have the Covid infection itself this past year. It has never subsided since and on March 3rd I also developed severe vertigo that sent me to the ED. They diagnosed Labrynthitis and a follow-up ENT visit confirms some hearing loss. I am wrapping up a dose of steroids for cranial nerve inflammation and progress has been slow. About a 30% vertigo improvement but no change with the Tinnitus. I have a follow-up ENT visit in 3 weeks and really hope for these symptoms to subsided. During the day the sound is masked by environmental noises, however trying to sleep at night has been a challenge. This has to be Covid-related since there is no other explanation or change in my life to explain this away. I in a wait-and-see phase right now and am just coping.
I had my first Pfizer vaccine yesterday evening and developed tinnitus a few hours later. It lasted all night, ebbed to where I didn’t notice it during the day, and it came back an hour or two ago. That was unexpected. Hope it goes away.
I developed tinnitus in my left ear 2 days after vaccination for COVID-19
Hi Professor Azer,
Which vaccine did you receive?
I have hearing loss of low tones and double hearing in one ear and tinnitus in the other after the second Moderna vaccine. Doing oral and tympanic membrane steroids now. I was told by two ENTs that they are seeing a potential trend post vaccine. One said that they are seeing it more in people with prior autoimmune conditions and some prior hearing loss.
The evening of the day I received the 1st Pfizer vaccine, I had a sudden onset of intense itching deep into my right ear, which was the side I received my injection on. This itching went down deep into my Eustachian tube and lasted about an hour before it finally stopped. I then had itching in that ear on and off but more mild and would feel occasional warmth come and go in and around that ear over the next couple of weeks. I then developed tinnitus 17 days after receiving the vaccine. The ringing has been constant and has not stopped since. I have seen an ENT and they say nothing can be done about tinnitus other than coping strategies. I reported this to VAERS. This needs to be brought out in the open and not dismissed! I was perfectly fine prior to this vaccine. Now, I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to enjoy silence again.
Thanks for sharing. I can empathize after having had tinnitus for about eight months following a concussion. I received a similar perspective on learning to cope with it and found it to be unsettling. In many cases though, it gets better over time although progress can be gradual and non-linear.
I agree! This should be a widely reported issue! 5 days after I received my first Pfizer vaccine I started experiencing dizziness which got progressively worse. I could not even open my eyes without vomiting. Got so severe I had to go to hospital. They did MRI, catscan, bloodwork, etc. No conclusive result other than diagnosing as vertigo. The symptoms have gotten somewhat better but I have a constant ringing in both ears with the left side being much worse. I have good days and bad days with some episodes putting me in bed. Very hard to work like this – at least I am working from home! I have been to ENT with several tests that concluded it is not BPPV form of vertigo. Scheduled for other tests next week. Not confident much will come of it.
I absolutely believe this was vaccine related which I see the new J&J vaccine is minimizing in their results and not attributing the tinnitus to the vaccine. Others are saying their symptoms go away in a couple of weeks…I am going on 6 weeks of this now!!
I have had the same experience. I developed tinnitus about a week after my 2nd vaccine. I have never had this issue before, so it was scary. I contacted my ent and was seen the next day to rule out issues with the ear. They had no answer and had me give it 2 weeks with no improvement or worsening to have it checked with an mri. Just us that done and thankfully no tumor causing this issue. Now it’s a wait and see if it goes away, and practice coping strategies. I absolutely hate it, but I don’t regret getting the vaccine. I hope they can figure this out for all of us.
I know it’s frustrating and frightening for the people who developed tinnitus after the vaccine. I’ve got tinnitus myself after several ear infections and it’s extremely annoying at times.
But it’s important to realize that Covid infections themselves are causing a lot of tinnitus, and causing existing tinnitus to get worse. As the article says, as many as 15% of patients hospitalized w/Covid develop tinnitus and hearing loss, and 40% of those with existing tinnitus experiencing worsening of symptoms after a Covid infection [1].
So, if you’ve got a history of tinnitus, steel yourself because there’s a decent chance it’ll get worse in the near future, either from Covid or the vaccine. For me personally, I’d rather take my chances with the vaccine. But it’s a “devil you know” situation.
The good news is that tinnitus tends to improve with time. So you’ll likely have learned to cope with it well by this time next year. Also, there are some experimental treatments on the horizon that could more or less cure tinnitus (eg, look up “bimodal neuromodulation”).

I have developed tinnitus, constant ringing, and headaches since my first Moderna vaccine three weeks ago. Last night, I experienced a sudden onset of vertigo, lingering into today. My question is three parts: 1) Is the ringing and vertigo possibly caused from the first vaccination? 2) Should I receive my second vaccination which is due next week? 3) Should I get tested to see if I might have contracted Covid?
Thanks
Hi Carl, curious what you ended up doing and how it went for you.
I got my first Covid vaccine shot (Pfizer) a week and a half ago and woke up this morning with muffled humming sound affecting both ears. Its hard to describe kind of like a 18 wheeler idle engine sound far away. I never had tinnitus before, ear infections yes tons especially in my childhood, I am 37 now. Hopefully it goes away. Is there anything I can do to help it go away? I heard taking zinc helps?
Hi David,
Zinc certainly can’t hurt. From what I’ve seen, there’s not a lot of rigorous clinical evidence related to tinnitus treatments. A lot of treatment modalities are focused on relaxation and habituation – focusing on the emotional response to tinnitus more than the condition itself. Some people report having success with notched music therapy or acoustic coordinated reset neuromodulation. Tinnitus retraining therapy probably has the most research behind it. There haven’t been many successful drug trials for the condition and no FDA-approved drugs. In many cases, it gets better on its own, which makes it difficult to say any treatment has a strong effect. Whatever you do, try to stay positive, relaxed and avoid focusing on it more than necessary.
I also have Tinnitus after receiving the Moderna vaccine.
I have mild and controlled tinnitus for many years, I had Pfizer vaccine a week ago and it’s made my right ear a lot lot worse, it a lot louder!!! I do hope it fades as I will be very worried about having the second vaccine!! It’s unbelievable this is my worse nightmare that it should ever get louder !! What to do?
Hi Brian,
Have you heard anything else conclusive with the vaccine? I’m scheduled for my first Moderna shot on Saturday. I have pulsatile tinnitus which started to get worse around December. So I’m nervous that it’s going to make it even worse. My mother has tinnitus and it’s been 2-3 weeks after her first Moderna shot and her symptoms are terrible and not going away. So I don’t know if I want to risk it.
Hi Scott,
I’ve done a fair amount of digging and haven’t seen anything definitive on the subject. There weren’t reports of tinnitus for the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines in the summaries of the relevant Phase 3 trials, but in the VAERS database, there are a number of repots. When I looked in the VAERS database with 25,044 reports from the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, there are 153 reports of tinnitus, or 0.61% of the total reports. To date, some 109 million vaccine doses have been administered.
For just the Moderna vaccine, there were 60 reports of tinnitus on VAERS out of a pool of 10,043 total reports (0.6%).
There was a study that aimed at looking how COVID-19 itself changed tinnitus published recently (https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fpubh.2020.592878/full). Another study looked at hearing changes in hospitalized patients (https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/14992027.2020.1798519).
Did your mother develop tinnitus after the first Moderna shot, or did she have it beforehand?
Thanks Brian. I appreciate the great info. My mom has had it for 35 years. I spoke to my ENT today and he said he’s had no reports of people who had the vaccine complaining that they’re tinnitus has dramatically increased. So I think I’m just going to get the shot tomorrow. I’m nervous but I’m also paranoid about getting covid as well. And it looks like I’m going to have to take the plunge sooner or later. Hopefully I won’t have the same issues as my mom.
I noticed a low whistle in my left ear a few days after the Pfizer COVID vaccine. I have no history of tinnitus or hearing problems. I am worried about having the second jab as I don’t want it to get worse. It has been going on for a couple of weeks now.
Hi Chrystie – I got bad vertigo and tinnitus about 5 days after first Pfizer but Dr. recommended going for second one anyway. “Better to get symptoms and get better than to get covid and possibly die” train of thought. My symptoms did not get worse or better after the second vaccine. Might as well get it and be fully protected. I am going on week six of this!!
After receiving 2nd Pfizer vaccine now have ringing in right ear…I would have never gotten vaccine if I had any idea this would happen…I pray its temporary
Which arm did you get the vaccine in?
Yes me too. Very bad ringing in the ears after 2nd Pfizer vaccine. Also ears seem to be clogged and hearing gets better after yawning but then it’s clogged again. Didn’t lose my hearing but something isn’t right. Going to an ENT soon
Could be a Eustachian tube issue? Please report back after you go to the ENT.
Exactly, 24 hours after the Moderna vaccine my sinuses swelled giving me a headache also have fatigue muscle ache/stiffness and chills. Within the next hour both my ears started to itch and in a couple more hours I had pain in my middle ears along with ringing. Aleve toned down the pain some but not the ringing or muffled pressure. When I was a kid earaches were common due to my Eustachian tube on one side being slanted improperly and holding fluid. I had not heard that ear problems was a side-effect from the covid vaccine until it was my side-effect from the vaccine. I believe my history must have something to do with it.
I’ve developed ringing in ears, more so in my right ear (shot was received on right side). It started a few weeks after second Moderna shot.
I also had the Moderna vaccine and received my second dose on Feb. 10th. 13 days later was in the ER for severe vertigo and eventually developed tinnitus. I have never had issues with either before. It has been about 4-5 days straight with tinnitus. Hoping it resolves eventually but I do see an ENT on the 16th.
I had the astrazenaca jab three weeks ago and have experinced a substantial increase in the level of my tinnitus since. I have alo experinced some fatigue. I’m really hoping that the levels of tinnitus reduce to previous levels in time as this is exhausting….
Wow, there quite are few people experience hearing loss, buzzing and I an one of them.
I developed stuffed ear, hearing loss the morning after my first of Pfizer. It has been a week already. Many say 2nd shot will make it even worse.
I seem to be experiencing the same. Got the shot yesterday and woke up with hearing loss and sense of pressure in both ears.
Did you guys end up getting the 2nd shot? If so, how did symptoms turn out?
My son (22) developed tinnitus about a week after the first Pfizer dose. Went to ENT and had wax removed and it got slightly better but he is having a very hard time with it. He is supposed to get his second dose tomorrow and I’m worried it will get worse.
Hi Bonnie, how did it turn out with your son’s 2nd dose?
I had tinnitus 10 days after the 1st dose of pfizer vacccine with fullness in my left ear which get worse after the 2nd dose, in addition to insomnia, anexiety and tension headache that incresing with physical or mental stress. I sought medical advice and invstigtated by all related tests, even with MRI brain and MRI spine and all came normal. Finally, they told me that it is most propably related to covid 19 vaccine and just do vestibular excercise. All symptoms improved after 3 weeks of the 2nd dose of vaccine except tinnitus still going on. Hopfully to get better soon, because it is realy annoing and impact on my quality of life.
So I got pfizer dose 1 yesterday and before the 15 min wait was up afterwards I noticed a difference in my hearing like things were harder to hear but loud pitches also hurt my ears like they were more sensitive. It faded mostly last night but then when I woke up today it was back any ideas what’s going on? I had tinnitus already and it has actually calmed down right now it feels like my ears need to pop like I’m in a tunnel.
Hi Audrey,
The hearing sensitivity issue could be hyperacusis. Unless you can pop your Eustachian tubes, the ear fullness issue probably should be checked out by an ENT.
Ringing in my ears after 2nd Moderna vaccine.
I have had tinnitus for the past 3 yrs and last yr it had subsided. After 1st Pfizer vaccine shot got really bad tinnitus in left ear. Started about a day to two days after shot and has been going on for over 3 weeks. It is maddening and I will not go for 2nd dose. Had no idea this would happen as there is no data on this at all. It completely ruins your life. Especially trying to sleep which is somewhat impossible.
I have more worries about getting vaccinated now, I have very bad tinnitus in one ear and do not want it in both! I think not enough facts being told about these fairly new vaccines, since our country is slow rolling out it is not a bad thing… right now I don’t think so…
I have had underlying tinnitus for 4 years now brought on with transcription/headphones. I have learned to live with it…more of an annoyance. I had the Pfizer vaccine Monday, and woke up with a massive increase in my tinnitus in both ears. I would describe it like a buzzing “hi-fi” sound that is constant. I am worried about having this increase with the second vaccine later this month. Anyone else had it increase after the second dose?
I had the J&J vaccine 4 days ago and still have hearing loss in my left hear and constant ringing and headache. From the looks of this comment string this doesn’t seem to represent a .03% issue
My life has been ruined by the first dose of the moderna vaccine. Immediately after vaccination I had severe anxiety my heart rate shot up. I had the paranoia and impending fear and doom for 8 days. During all of this I have had extreme tinnitus in both ears. Now I have to see an ent and a neurologist. I have been to ER 5x and my PCP has done nothing to help me. She says it’s all in my head.
Hi I posted this answer but I wanted to reply to your entry.
Something similar happened to me with the flu vaccine 2 years ago.
This is how I made it go away.
Go to an ENT or a primary care physician and request steroids. It’s what they do for people who have the flu shot and get tinnitus.
I had to do that. It was one of the scariest things I ever went through. Happened within an hour of the flu shot.
Stress and anxiety will make it much worse.
You may start clenching your jaw out of stress and that will further exacerbate the tinnitus.
If you are clenching your jaw look up Physical Therapy exercises for TMJ or have an ENT refer you to a Physical Therapist. They will give you simple exercises.
My ringing finally stopped nearly completely after 2 years. The steroids and the exercises helped a lot.
Weird things trigger it. If I am in a house with radiators instead of forced air heat, it’s like that sound gets stuck in my ears now occasionally.
It will get better – try and stay calm – I know it’s hard. Try and ask the people close to you for compassion and understanding.
See an ENT asap or your primary care doctor! Get steroids! Make sure to keep your jaw relaxed. Praying for all of you.
Got my Pfizer vaccine today few hours ago, and ringing in my ears just started.
Googled it and found this website. I really hope it won’t last forever!
I got the Pfizer BioNTech covid vaccine in January and the second dose in February at 35 days. Both doses exacerbated my tinnitus. I first developed tinnitus in October – before the vaccine – I suspect as the result of a viral infection. My other symptoms at the time were very mild and transient- lethargy and diarrhea for a day. I researched covid19 and tinnitus but couldn’t find a link, so I guessed that this may have been another virus (enterovirus?). My initial bout of tinnitus was bad but slowly improved over 2 months and I recall that it had subsided into the background and by Christmas I was grateful for feeing better. But the tinnitus unexpected got bad again over a week or two after the my first dose of Pfizer vaccine in early January. I did some research at the time and couldn’t find a reported link between tinnitus and the vaccine. The tinnitus had again improved a bit, although was not fully subsided by day 35, so I decided to go ahead with my scheduled 2nd dose of the vaccine. My tinnitus got worse again. Am 3 weeks out and really hoping the tinnitus will improve again and that it won’t now be chronic. It’s certainly slow to improve and is affecting my concentration. I totally support covid vaccination – I wouldn’t want to put anyone off this – just reporting my experience as if there had been a more established link between this and tinnitus I might have considered getting by with just the one dose?
Hi Rodger, thanks for sharing, curious how you’re feeling a month later.
After dose 1 of moderna, I have constant ringing in both ears. I’m wondering if I should skip dose 2? See what happens with ringing, and get second dose months from now?
My tinnitus appeared right after my second Moderna vaccine. Two weeks later still have it. Makes me crazy.. Lots of discharge from ears too.
Do you ears pop and hurt when they do?
I had my first Moderna shot on Jan 8th. Within the first 24 hours I had sudden total hearing loss in my left ear. Had a hearing test which showed no ability to hear in left ear. My ENT placed me on 60mg of Steriods for 14 days. (at that time he did not think it related to the Vaccine shot). At end of 14 days still no hearing. He then gave me the first Steriods injection directly into the ear, followed by two more injections. On the second injection he said he was sure it was the result of the Vaccine shot, as he had been seeing this on the ENT blogs. I had an MRI last week and it showed nothing! Obviously I did not get my second shot. I have no ability to hear in my left ear. There is little hope that it will return. I did repot this to VAERS, I have heard nothing. Can any one tell me how often this has occurred? Why is this not being reported?
On May 3 I had my first Covid shot. It was the Pfizer vaccine. I have had tinnitus but learn to live with it or manage it. After taking the vaccine my tinnitus became severe a week later. At night is the worst. I can’t sleep. Before the sound was annoying but manageable. Now it’s out of control. This is awful, I’m debating the 2nd shot. If this intensify more I can’t handle it.
Hi Deller, did you end up getting the 2nd shot?
I have tinnitus after receiving Pfizer 1st dose vaccine
I have had tinnitus since December. This occurs every once in awhile and then disappears. I am scheduled for my first vaccine shot next Wednesday and the second I assume a few weeks later. One of my neighbors came to me an hour ago asking if I could hear a ringing in the building. I couldn’t. She had her vaccine two days ago. After telling her I thought it was in her ears, I started investigating and found this site. I was nervous in the first place about getting the vaccine because I have a history of drug allergies and adverse reactions as well as some food intolerance, but my doctor assured me that would not be a problem. Now after reading the testimonials here, I am very concerned about going ahead with it. Would like some input.
I am in the same boat as you Sheila. I am going to a allergist this week to be tested for drugs in the vaccine. I had sudden hearing loss and tinnitus for 3 years. After reading this I am thinking I will not get the vaccine, and I am missing part of a lung. Very hard decision.
I received the J & J vaccine at a mass inoculation site last Tuesday. The following Wednesday about 16 hours after received the inoculation, I developed ringing in my left ear. It is persistent and annoying. I waited three days and then reported it to the CDC using the VAERS form. They may think that this is “minor” but I have never had anything like this in my life previously. A friend of mine, an RN, also had ringing in her ear with the J & J vaccine. She said that on Day 5, it ended. I am now on Day 5 and mine is still persistent.
Judy,
Hows your ringing? Did it end?
Hi- Im very sad to report that after 3 weeks of my first covid shot (Pfizer) I started hearing a high pitch static type of sound in my head. It was loud enough yesterday that I couldn’t sleep well neither nap. Im afraid now this could be related to my first covid shot and Im hesitant to take my second ine, in case it may worsen this new condition. I called to postpone it and made an appointment with an ENT.
I have a couple of questions.
1) Where can we formally call or write to report this possible side effect? I wonder there could be many more cases that are un-reported
2) Is there data on how those 152 people evolved? Did tinnitus become permanent for all of them?
This is very concerning and more should be done to track this possible side effect.
Thanks for your article.

Hi Maria,
You can report side effects via VAERS:
https://vaers.hhs.gov
As for your second question, I don’t think CDC necessarily follows up with people who share information with VAERS. I think they just use it to monitor for adverse events.
Best,
Brian
I developed tinnitus in my right ear after my first Moderna vaccine, which I received in my right arm. I’m due to have the second one next week, and I’m not sure about having it.
I had my 2nd shot of Moderna on Feb 2nd. Last night while watching t.v. All of a sudden my left ear( yes same side as vaccinated) started making weird noises. Woke up this morning and everything sounds muffled on that side. I took a 24hr. Nasal decongestion trying to jump to conclusions I feel fine other wise. Had the usual reactions to the vaccine dizzie only after the first vaccine with nausea fever chills. 2nd vaccine same but chills were worse. The only thing that was weird for me other than this was exactly a week later to the day after each vaccine I got sick again. The sudden onset of this is what sent me to the web to research it. Thank you for doing this🙏
***UPDATE*** Went to an ENT today had a hearing test and exam. I have moderate to severe hearing loss in my left ear. I was his 2nd patient of the day with the exact same thing happening after the vaccine. Diagnosis unknown. He said it was a good thing I didn’t wait to come in. He prescribed a very high dose of prednisone for a week. I will have another hearing test in a week and exam.He feels at some point they may want to do an MRI.
Hi. Did your symptoms improve after having steroids? I have had tinnitus for a week now, which started an hour or two after my Pfizer vaccine. I am undecided about whether to seek medical help for it.
I too developed Tinnitus after 1st shot of Pfizer vaccine.
I have never had this condition and have been advised by my MD not to take the 2nd shot .
I have an appointment with a ENT tomorrow .
It’s quite a horrible symptom …..Pfizer actually lists this as one of the possible adverse reactions .
It says , I believe , on their site ” If you experience these serious side effects call your MD right away .”
One of the symptoms is “ringing in your ears ” . So what is this ? Why is this ? And why is this not being reported in the news .
Thanks, Wendy. I found this link from First Databank with similar wording to what you mentioned. Is this what you were referring to? https://www.fdbhealth.com/covid-19/~/media/Documents/Form%20NOT%20Required/US/Samples/Pfizer%20Covid19%20Vaccine%20Meducation%20%20English%20%2011421
I had the Pfizer vaccine in my left arm on Jan. 23rd. I had no side effects at the time, other than a sore arm, as with any shot. However, two days later I lost all hearing in my left ear. I had no history of ear infections or other ear or hearing problems, except for wax buildup two or three times. On Jan. 26th, I saw an ENT. To my dismay, there was no wax. He prescribed the standard treatment of Prednisone for Sudden Idiopathic Hearing Loss. No change after the first round, so I had a second round, and also had the series of three ear injections with Dexamethasone. Had an MRI, as well, which was normal. A couple of weeks into all this, I began to have a bit of sound-generated static in my ear, and this continues today. (Fortunately, I’ve only had the most minor of tinnitus in that ear, and even it is pretty much gone now.) Early in this process, I checked online for any possible connection to the vaccine, and I found none. My ENT did not suspect any connection either, and he advised me to go on with the second vaccine dose. I took it on Feb. 13th and had some mild fatigue afterward, but have had no additional issues. At this point, there are no further treatment options for the hearing loss. The ENT says that some improvement may occur over the coming months, but the chances are not good for a full recovery. I get another hearing test in August and then see my ENT again after that. Until reading all of the comments here, I had concluded that my Sudden Hearing Loss was unrelated to the vaccine. Now I am suspicious. From what I’ve seen online, Sudden Hearing Loss most commonly occurs in people in their 40s and 50s. I am 66, so my hearing loss onset doesn’t fit with the expected age span. I am wondering if Sudden Hearing Loss, and maybe the tinnitus, if indeed they are brought on by the vaccines, will follow a different course than the usual idiopathic version. Maybe it will prove to be less durable, i.e., more prone to resolve. I guess time will tell. I think I’ll check in with my ENT in a couple of months to see if his perspective has changed and if any new approaches to my condition have presented themselves. One thing for everyone to keep in mind: If you have a sudden hearing loss, get in to see an ENT as soon as possible. It is an emergency. If not treated within the first two weeks, the chance of recovery or improvement goes WAY down. I wish the best to all of you who are facing these difficulties.
Read my post on March 12th. I had the same results, total hearing loss in left ear.
My ENT didn’t think it was related at first, but he begin to see a lot of talk on the
ENT blog he follows. There is no doubt in my mind that it was because of the vaccine shot.
I can’t understand why this problem is not being discussed. People have a right to know.
Me too – woke up with hearing loss and tinnitus in my left ear the next morning after the Pfizer vaccine. It did resolve through the course of the day but it could just have well been permanent. I was all set to start on the Prednisone when it started to let up.
I have had severe tinnitus in both ears since 1993. Over the years it has very gradually subsided to the point where I am not constantly listening to the awful screaching. My first Pfizer shot, about 2 weeks ago, greatly increased the intensity of the constant ringing. The increase began the day after the shot. It does not appear to be improving at all. I am seriously considering not getting the second shot until either the ringing improves.
Brian.
When the people are saying that right after the vaccine these things are happening. There has to be open honesty from the company to admit and add it to one of the side effects.
Professionally you know this is not a joke and while the benefits may outweigh the issue there is no doubt this is happening as more and more people experience it whether it is reported or not.
I also had my first Pfizer vaccine, have had about 10 recent +Covid negative swabs (for my own comfort)
Have had the antibody test to confirm I had not been infected.
I have never had issues with hearing or underlying health issues prior.
Yet after the first Pfizer vaccine I became lightheaded, my heart throbbed and raced for about 10 seconds directly after the injection, I got light headed again and then I immediately felt like throwing up.
That lasted for 5 min. I was excited to get the first vaccine.
The day was fine. The next day I too developed a deep itching in both ears, light ringing, then now it feels like both of my ears are underwater. As if there are pools in both of them.
My wife is experience ringing in her ears 1 week later. She too recieved the Pfizer. Her asthma has seem to have gotten worse as well.
She didn’t experience any symptoms during the vaccination process.
Another person I worked with also experienced the heart racing for 5 seconds directly after.
My annoyance with the analyst of side effects- the same are occurring in other countries- is this persistent denial or detour attempt that it is in fact related to the vaccines.
I get it we want them to continue. In the end right now we are all just rats in a cage.
The reports in trials truthfully could have indeed left this information out to save face. Just like J&J left out traces of carcinogens in baby powder for so long.
It’s been done before. I ask you and your collegues not to let it happen again.
I received the Pfizer vaccine 2/17, and about a week later developed sores in my mouth. My dentist thought it was possibly oral shingles as they did not look like canker sores. I told him I had the shingles vaccine. The following week I woke up about 4 in the morning with what sounded like my sheets were loud by my ear. Then, lost the hearing in my right ear. I also have constantly what sounds like white noise in my ear. The ENT has started me on Prednisone and I’m going in for tests this Thursday. So far no improvement. I’m scared to death my hearing will not return. I’ve been on Prednisone for four days now with no improvement. Should I have seen any improvement by now? I’ve never had this problem before the vaccine.
Hi,
Per my prior communication, sadly, I developed tinnitus a few days ago and I fear this could be related to the first dose of the Pfizer shot I had 3 weeks ago. I saw an ENT today and he believes this is unrelated (because I noticed it 3 weeks after the shot, not immediately after)… I was not aware ringing in the ears was listed as a possible side effect, but now I see Brian posted on 3/15 a link where is listed.
Question- Is there data on how long after the shot people that developed tinnitus noticed it? Or a maximum of time by which the association can be made?
Thanks again for this article and allowing people to connect on topic and share their experiences.
Brian-
Please read my previous posts: March 12 & 15. The questions I asked are important to me and I think they would be helpful to others as well. There are others who ask good questions too. I would appreciate it if you could answer these questions! Where do we go to find answers????
Hi Jerry,
I wish I had a good answer to your questions, but have not been able to find anything more than what I’ve shared here. There have been some reports that investigate the link between tinnitus and COVID-19, but not for vaccines. Here is one report: https://casereports.bmj.com/content/13/11/e238419
I received the Pfizer vaccine 2/17, and about a week later developed sores in my mouth. My dentist thought it was possibly oral shingles as they did not look like canker sores. I told him I had, had the shingles vaccine.
I posted back on March 6…I too have tinnitus…mostly in my right ear. When it originally started my hearing in that ear was muffled. I went to two doctors and the second put me on prednisone. My ear doesn’t seem as muffled but still rings. I went to the ENT last week…I don’t have any hearing hearing loss (although I felt like I did). They couldn’t find anything else wrong and I was told that tinnitus usually goes away in 2 to 3 months. I will say that the audiologist said she has heard of the connection between tinnitus and the vaccine. Hopefully this is temporary!
After the first dose of Pfizer C-19 Vaccination, my long term Bilateral Tinnitus amplified in the left ear within 30 minutes of a left arm injection. I googled the symptom and found this site.
I hope this is a temporary reaction, but if not back to base line soon, I may forego the 2nd injection to prevent further tinnitus.
I have found that many things worsen tinnitus temporarily such as a cold or sinus infection, or a big glass of red wine, so perhaps the injection is simply a stress on the body that will also dissipate in the morning (?)
The morning after my first Pfizer vaccine I woke up with tinnitus and hearing loss in my left ear. I am an audiologist so I checked to see if there was fluid, or congestion, or wax in my ear, which there was not. I had a moderate hearing loss in the morning, but by evening it had improved to a mild level, and the next morning was back to normal. The tinnitus also resolved. I was concerned that if I had to take prednisone (for the sudden hearing loss), how would it interact with the vaccine I had taken the day before! Luckily I didn’t have to deal with that issue, but it was scary nevertheless.
Robbyn-
I read with great interest your post today. Please read my post on Mar 12/15/16.
I’m interested in knowing more about the effect prednisone my have on the vaccine shot?
Can you help me out there?? As you can see i was on prednisone for 14 days, plus three injections!
Whoops – see my reply to you below (March 19, 2021 at 1:56 am).
I got my first vaccine on February 16,2021 almost immediately I felt ear air pressure, tinnitus, intensive pain from my hip to the knee and headache. The pain on my hip and knee disappeared, but the tension on my ears is persistent. I got my second vaccine on March 9, and the issues with my ears are getting worse and they headache come and go. I visited my primary Doctor and he said is nothing to do about. I’m feeling desperate, I can’t sleep. I’m wondering how long I will be suffering this. By the way I got Pfizer vaccine
I don’t know if there might be any negative interaction between prednisone and the Pfizer vaccine – it’s just that when I received the vaccination one of the warnings/recommendations given to me by the nurse was to not have any other vaccinations in the next 30 days. When prednisone was recommended the next day due to the hearing loss, I wondered whether prednisone might be contraindicated in the same way “other vaccinations” were not recommended. I did not end up taking prednisone and so did not end up inquiring as to whether the two medications might interact negatively. I will see if I can find out more, though.
Robbyn-
Thanks you for getting back with that information. Given the fact I have loss all hearing on my left side
I have been struggling to get information. Still hoping someone could tell me how often this has occurred and if there is any hope of my hearing returning!
Hi Jerry – My husband is going through the same thing. I’m so scared for him. It happened to him four days after the Pfizer shot. Started out with ringing the gradual went to total hearing loss. I’m trying to find out anything I can. Please share with me if you find any helpful information.
Thanks,
Kelly
Same/Same! Left arm first dose of Moderna, within in a few minutes (had not left the store/pharmacy) my left ear felt like it closed and hearing diminished. It was very brief, and I didn’t associate this symptom to the vaccine. Forgot about it actually. Then the second vaccine a month exactly after the first caused mild fever and sleepiness the second day. Felt fine by the evening after fever broke. The next morning I had a major vertigo attack. NEVER before had I experienced Vertigo! Very frightening. Tinnitus also began that day only in my left ear. Fairly mild but also a first for me. So I had 2 more milder Vertigo episodes over the next 3 days and substantial dizziness. The Vertigo has ended , the dizziness remained for almost a month. I was afraid to drive and did not. Rarely I have tinnitus now, but I am not 100% free of it. But I continue to have left ear pain that comes and goes. Having it right now. I saw an ENT who saw nothing wrong with my ear. He didn’t do any tests. Basically blew me off I felt. After finding this blog today and reading all these statements, I am really shocked that this is not being investigated and that warnings are not available for anyone especially that may be particularly vulnerable to these reactions. Health care providers should know about this. Do they???? With my ear hurting now and fairly often I think I will try another ENT physician who may be able to help me. I am so relieved that I found this, and I hope that all of you improve and find the help you need.
Linda-
Your question – Should health care provider know about this? Yes they should! But how are they to know if the information is suppressed, or so hidden in the VAERS data that no one can find it.
I did find that as far as total hearing loss the number was 14 reports in 31,000 Adverse Event reports.
Ok, but how many did no get reported and against how many shots being given??? Does not tell me what are the odds! I’m not even sure if I’m reading the data correctly. I hope you see another ENT,
in my opinion, ENT’s should know about these issues!
Astravenica is being rolled out now in Australia, I am a Tinnitus sufferer 5yrs now and its a living hell. I am going to wait and see as the last thing I want is this injection to ramp it up.
Lyn – Please let us know what you decide to do. I’ve had tinnitus 2 yrs., and it has ruined my life. It’s bad. And every single time I took a medication, it got louder. So I’ve taken nothing in that time, including flu vaccinations (since they have meds in them). I wish you all the best.
I have not been vaccinated yet. But in January of 2020 before we really knew much about Covid, I got really sick, fever, etc, I think it was Covid, and I got better after 1 week but the lack of hearing and the ringing in the ears went in for about 2 months and gradually went away. I thought it would be permanent but it did go away. I would recommend to everyone who has it to take Zinc and vitamins A and D. Build up your immune system, be patient, have faith, and just get through it. I really think in most cases it will go away. Prayers and blessings for all of you!
Now my husband has tinnitus is both ears started 2 days after Moderna vaccine. Same place did both of our vaccines.
I received the Moderna vaccine on March 2, 2021 (1st dose). I have severe Asthma and Autoimmune disease. I felt horrible after my vaccine. Fifteen minutes after receiving the vaccine I was dizzy and felt nauseated. Several days post vaccine I was extremely tired and felt like I had been in the gym doing a heavy workout but in reality I was home on the sofa. Since the vaccine I have experienced severe Tinnitus. The ringing is so bad it is pulsating in one ear while the other rings continuously.
I have not slept since receiving the vaccine. I am up and down all night. The ringing wakes me up from a dead sleep. I will sleep 2 hours then wake up, then stay awake for 2 hours, then back asleep. I have never experienced anxiety until now. It has consumed my life for the past 18 days! I am scared to death to get my second dose. I have been to an audiologists, ENT specialists, family doctor and scheduled for MRI scans next week. When I hear people talk about suicide I totally get it! I will not deal with this forever! Currently the doctors have me taking Ginkgo Biloba, Lipo- Flavonoids, Multivitamin with Zinc, A, D, B12, B6. No caffeine. Yesterday I was prescribed Clonazepam for the anxiety before bedtime to just relax enough to sleep a few hours. I have never had to take controlled prescription drugs. I also have waterfall noise therapy in my room to help drown out the ringing. I am miserable and major depressed! Please pray for all of us!!!!
Kimbely, I am praying for everyone. I will not take this vaccine. I have had horrible tinnitus since Jan. 2019, and I found that after taking two times after that, it got louder. Since then, not only will I never take another vaccine, I will not take another drug in my life unless my life depends on it. I’ve tried everything in 2 years, seen the best drs. (flew to see them) – there is no cure. I am so sad for you. Some of us have it bad, and cannot ever live normal lives again despite trying everything. It’s especially frightening when your tinnitus got worse each time you took another medication (and the two I took I’d taken before I got tinnitus with no problem). Once you get it really bad, life is never the same. I’ve spent thousands of dollars on doctors, therapy for my anxiety, everything. Drs. have no idea most of the time why you get tinnitus nor do they think it’s a life-altering event (which it is for some — not all). I’m praying for everyone on this thread.
I have Tinnitus now 1 1/2 weeks after my first Oxford jab. It’s driving me nuts and I have been feeling quite unwell for about a week
Here in Chile, I was vaccinated on Monday the 15th with the Sinovac vaccine. Since that night I have developed excruciating tinnitus in both ears and it is not improving. I have read all the comments on this forum and apparently no one has improved except for one person who suffered from COVID 19 in January 2020.
Please if someone reports an improvement over time, post here to know if there is hope
Next Monday I will do audiometry exams and I will tell you how it goes
Blessings to all!
I developed tinnitus also on the 8th day after the injection with headaches. I got the Moderna vaccine on 2/26/21(first shot). A few hours after receiving the vaccine I developed left sided(side I got injection) neck, shoulder, arm soreness with left arm pit swollenness as well in lymph node. I am a registered nurse and thought nothing of it as that was normal side effects right after. During the night got chills no fever and it passed with mild fatigue. But when the ringing in ears and headaches started 8 days and are still present on 16th day I attributed to the vaccine. I seen my primary care physician on 3/12/21 who ruled out sinus infection, ear infection, no wax, no inflammation in ear, no earache, no congestion. I’ve been to chiropractor twice which has relieved the headaches but not the tinnitus. I am scheduled to see an ENT on 3/24/21 for hearing test and exam. I couldn’t get in any sooner. The headaches still come and go on top of my head or back of my head. It’s very annoying as I NEVER had this prior nor made aware that this was even a side effect until after researching and found this article and seeing everyone’s posts. I am scheduled for the 2nd shot on 3/26/21 but will not be getting it despite what the ENT suggests. I am 54 yrs old and can’t afford to lose my hearing or suffer more intense ringing.
I started with pulsating tinnitus in my right ear several hours after my first Pfizer vaccination on March 15. I’m 62 years old with no prior hearing issues. I was diagnosed with sudden idiopathic hearing loss of my right ear with unrestricted hearing of the left ear by an ENT on March 19. I am on a 13 day progressive intervention of prednisone, which I started on March 20. I also have to quarantine for 3 weeks due to the suppression of my immune system due to the prednisone. ENT seems confident that I will resolve over time and regain hearing loss which will also resolve tinnitus because I didn’t wait to seek medical attention. So my advice is to get to an ENT ASAP if you have a similar experience after getting vaccinated.
I just had the 2nd Moderna vaccine on Friday. Felt utterly awful Friday and Saturday (fever chills headache nausea severe body aches and joint pain.) Still have chills this morning but not as bad. Headache still there and woke up with both ears ringing. I have a history of tinnitus but has not happened for awhile. Body still hurts (aches and pain.) I just slept for 12 hours and could just go right back to bed.
Terrified of getting any of three vaccines available in the U.S. now, because of two things: increased chances of blood clots/ Deep Vein Thrombosis and Tinnitus. I already have Tinnitus, but I’m at least able to sleep. I began researching the correlation between Tinnitus and the vaccines after reading about the CEO in Texas who killed himself from COVID-related Tinnitus. It appears that the vaccines replicate the protein spike which causes the blood clotting and Tinnitus. While only a small percentage of people are getting blood clot issues, it seems that more and more are reporting Tinnitus and Sudden Hearing loss. There is no cure for Tinnitus at this time. In people who already had mild cases of Tinnitus, after the shot ( some from the 1st and some from the 2nd Pfizer and Moderna, and 6% of the Johnson & Johnson) experienced new or worsened cases of it. For now, I think I need to amp up my vitamins and exercise, keep wearing a mask, and staying away from people as much as possible. I’m so bummed, because I was really looking forward to being vaccinated.
Am experiencing dizziness and light ringing in my ears three days after J & J vaccine, and am concerned.
I had the Johnson & Johnson vaccine on March 11th in my left arm. Within 30 minutes I was nauseous. The next morning I woke with a low grade fever, joint aches, tinnitus in my left ear and felt like I had been punched in the arm. All symptoms subsided by day three except for the ear issues, which actually got worse. I now have tinnitus in both ears and feel like I have slight hearing loss in both as well.
I also seem to be having a little fatigue, depression, anxiety and feelings of doom which I think may be from my body stressing from all the ringing.
I went to my PCP and she said she has personally saw several people with hearing/tinnitus issues after their covid vaccines, all three brands. After reading this thread, I have a call in to my PCP for a script for Prednisone but I’m not sure what else to do.
The only way I’m able to go to sleep at night is to turn on the tv and drown out the ringing. This is horrible! Praying for each of you that are also dealing with this!!!
I found this thread in early March. I had my vaccine in my right arm and that’s the ear I have the louder ringing in. I went to my doctor and was put on prednisone… that was two weeks ago and while the tinnitus decreased it is still there. I went to an ENT and there is nothing wrong with my hearing or ear. She did tell me that it usually resolves in two to three months. I’ve had tinnitus for a month now and it has gone from a screech to a hiss…which is more manageable. Try white noise for sleeping…it does help. I’m hoping for everyone that is dealing with this that it resolves!
I just had the J&J vaccine yesterday in my right arm. This morning I woke up with tons of pressure/fullness in my right ear and right nostril. The nostril cleared but now this afternoon my ear is still very “full” and ringing/swooshing and I can’t hear out of it well. I have no other side effects from the vaccine “yet.”
TBH all these comments of readers’ experiences are freaking me out. I have a son who is 19 and has hearing loss in both ears already. I’m not anti vaccination but should we risk him getting worse hearing issues from the vaccine? And at the same time if you get COVID you can also have hearing issues.
I did find this link – it looks like they already know the Pfizer vaccine can cause hearing issues as it states to get medical help immediately if you notice any of the more serious side effects: ear problems
https://www.fdbhealth.com/covid-19/~/media/Documents/Form%20NOT%20Required/US/Samples/Pfizer%20Covid19%20Vaccine%20Meducation%20%20English%20%2011421
Thank you for that link!
I’ve had tinnitus for over 2 years. I lost some hearing after a loud concert-I was given steroids which improved hearing but the tinnitus never went away. After seeing several doctors I was told it NEVER will go away You can only find ways to cope with it. Some days I do hear it more than others and it’s agonizing. I was debating the vaccine and now because of this I’m still torn. I’m hearing how it can worsen tinnitus but also hear that getting covid can do the same???!!!
I have a pretty severe case of tinnitus for the last 14 years I’ve got an appointment for my Covid vaccine in a month and after reading these comments I am very concerned about getting the vaccine however it seems like a lose lose scenario…
Watching for any new information and hoping for more conclusive data before I take the vaccine.
I’ve had tinnitus in my left ear for many years. It was a minor nuisance that never bothered me in the past, and it would always come and go. Five days after receiving the second dose of the Pfizer vaccine, I noticed a significant worsening of the tinnitus in my left ear. More troubling, I developed tinnitus in my right ear, when it did not previously exist. I’ve never experienced anything like this, ever. The loud, constant ringing in my ears lasted a solid two weeks. I could not concentrate at work. I could not sleep at night. I went to an ENT who ran some tests and could not find anything wrong. I happened to mention that it started 5 days after the second dose of the Pfizer vaccine, thinking he would believe me to be crazy for even suggesting such an outlandish cause-and-effect, but he actually took notice and said that he thought it could be very possible the vaccine caused the tinnitus! I’m a very healthy, 41-year-old female. I’ve been on a low-carb diet for three years, no recent exposure to loud noises, nothing that can explain the sudden tinnitus. The ENT was at a loss and sent me on my way, no medication or any course of treatment recommended. I will say, for those of you struggling with this, it does get better. About 4 weeks into this nightmare, the tinnitus subsided. It’s still there, but the intensity and loudness has decreased considerably. So DON’T LOSE HOPE!!! One thing that helped me was to listen to an audio recording on YouTube titled “Ultra High Pitch Tinnitus Therapy” on a channel called “Art of Zen.” I listened to that recording dozens of times, especially at night when trying to sleep. The channel has many recordings for people suffering with tinnitus, but that particular one had the same frequencies of tones I was experiencing. It’s hard to explain, but for some reason, listening to the same frequency as your tinnitus helps your brain ignore it more. It was the only thing that could help me fall asleep at night and concentrate at work during the day. One last thing – please file a report with VAERS if you are experiencing tinnitus after receiving the vaccine. The more people that report it, the more likely our experiences will be validated.
I received the 1st Pfizer vaccine March 12, 2021. By that evening and all the next day my arm was sore, as expected. I had a headache for well over a week. After a few days my ears were humming and I was very sensitive to any loud of sudden noises. We’re at Day 11 now and the humming is still in both ears. At first it sounded like I had my head up against the refrigerator while it was running. It is less loud now but always there, humming like a low-pitched bee. I can see how it would drive someone a bit crazy. I am a bit scared now to receive the second shot at the end of next week. Will it get worse? Will I lose hearing? I haven’t lost any hearing at this point. I’ll report this to my PCP and see if he’s heard of this, and let him know I’m experiencing it, and may see if he’ll prescribe steroids to alleviate it, at least somewhat. I feel for all of us, because I had no idea this was caused by the vaccine until this morning when I decided to google and see if anyone else MIGHT be having the same reaction. I’ve never had tinnitus in my life before.
My PCP is referring me to an ENT. He says he has not had any other reports of this with his other patients. Maybe they are not associating it with the vaccine?
I took the JNJ vaccine 3/13 and then it comes – the loud tinnitus of motor running. Today 3/23 and still the same I can only sleep 2-3 hours and wake up, don’t know if this is waked by the loud tinnitus in ear.
I have mosquito sound of tinnitus and hearing loss before vaccine but manageable as it’s there but not loud. I suspect it is the virus in the vaccine that trigger the tinnitus and I heard there are people used the herpes drug Valacyclovir to take care the virus causing tinnitus.
I’ve had tinnitus for 20 years. It has gotten progressively worse. Sometimes it is unbearable. I’ve been having what I call attacks the past few months. It becomes so loud, I can’t cope. I’ve been taking anti anxiety medication sporadically over the past ten years, now, I am taking it daily. The attacks last for hours which sounds like a smoke detector going off in my ear. I didn’t know about the correlation between the vaccines and tinnitus. Yesterday I got my first dose and within hours, the sound got very loud, has not calmed down and the anti anxiety meds aren’t helping now. They normally don’t help the noise but help me calm down. This noise since the shot has lasted 22 hours so far. I wish I would have known. This is no life.
I have had very bad tinnitus for many years from a lot of hearing damage during tours in VN and work inflicted damage afterwards over the years. I got the Moderna 1st dose vax 2 weeks ago and since then have had two times now waking up with severe hearing loss and very bad ringging. Head sounds like it’s inside a bucket with bad echoes and loss of hearing in the L side where I got the Moderna Vax shot.
Scheduled for the second dose in a few weeks and now wondering if I should proceed with it ??
I’m very concerned now ??
Received Pfizer vaccine 03/03. I’ve never had ringing ears until after receiving the vaccine . I’m scheduled for the second dose on 03/31 and will not be taking it! I made an appointment tomorrow with my doctor but after reading this thread I doubt there’s anything they can do.
My Eustachian tubes in both ears swelled 2 days after 1st dose of Pfizer Covid vaccine. Distorted sounds, muffled and amplified sounds, and disturbed equilibrium. Now I’m afraid to get 2nd dose but really need to for my husband who is immune compromised. Should I get 2nd dose? I think everyone should report their symptoms so that they can work on making it better.
Two nights after my second Moderna vaccine I had vertigo. I went to bed and woke up with ringing in my ears. My ears have not stopped ringing since then. It has been 6 days now. I went to an ENT yesterday. Thankfully my hearing test and ear exam were both normal. I submitted a VAERS(Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System) report online through the CDC. I would like to encourage anyone experiencing tinnitus they feel is related to the COVID vaccine to see an ENT as soon as possible and also Submit a VAERS Report online.
I had my first Pfizer vaccine on 3/2. On 3/3 I began experiencing a heaviness in my left side as in my left side feels like it weighs more than my right and it causes a sense of dizziness, though not the “room spinning” effect. It is very disconcerting, and not something I have experienced before. I was seen two days ago, told that it likely is not related to the vaccine. I was prescribed a different allergy medication with sudafed to decongest my ears, which seems to be helping a bit. I have a CT scan on Saturday to determine if anything worse has happened. I am a fit 43 year old female with seasonal allergies and a family history of heart disease. The ear that is affected is on the same side that I got my shot for whatever that is worth. Due to take second shot next week, but am very concerned.
Same for me with the Pfizer. Because reports are anecdotal they are not receiving enough attention for research. Please report your experience.
I developed tinnitus 6 days after receiving the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine. Reporting this just 2 days later, so my experience with it is not lengthy yet. For me, the symptom is a light, high-pitched tone, about equal on both ears. I do not have symptoms of hearing loss, since all my conversations and everyday environmental sounds seem regular. I am a 53 year old male, quite healthy, no other conditions, and I have never had a similar experience in my entire life. I had not previously contracted the Covid virus. I filed an adverse reaction report at the website: vaers.hhs.gov; it was quick to log a report. My best wishes to all who are experiencing a similar or worse condition.
I had the J&J vaccine yesterday (given in right arm) and woke up this morning with so much pressure/fullness in my right ear and now this afternoon it is ringing/swooshing as well.
Roughly same experience as Tony. Developed tinnitus 2 days after the first dose of Moderna. Light high pitched tone. No symptoms of hearing loss or anything else. Never had tinnitus prior to getting this shot. I have a desk job, so I have never been around loud equipment. Went to PCP today, does not think this is related to the vaccine. We can agree to disagree. Referred to ENT specialist. I will not be getting the second shot.
Pulsing Tinnitus accompanied with unexplained anxiety and intermittent heart palps, occurred two weeks after first dose of Moderna…going on continuous for 6 days now, not better not worse, started adding NAC (N-Acetylcysteine) supplement as suggested by another comment section and articles regarding ototoxicity from medications and flu vaccines, looking for ENT on my insurance waiting on insurance company to send me a list of providers on my plan, this is just weird and unexpected. Searching the internet and found this list of folks reporting many of the same issues, also found notes on other vaccines causing tinnitus issues for people so it seems logical that this vaccine could also be causing this issue for some people. Searched VAERS website and there are quite a few reports of tinnitus after Moderna vaccine in many varied ages of people in their 30’s to 60’s, I think there are equal if not more people reporting in this comment section, please everyone report their vaccine side effects on VAERS so data is public for others to see so it is not ignored or unseen for these new vaccine studies. Called Moderna and rep said she did not see reports of tinnitus ,but that they also were taking reports separate from VAERS and rep suggested I also report there. She could not legally advise if I should take the second dose or not and to consult physician. Really disappointed to skip the second vaccine for full efficacy , but don’t want to lose my hearing if this vaccine is ototoxic for me as it seems to be so far!
I just got my first Moderna shot on Tuesday, March 23rd. After getting the shot I went to sit in the area where they watch you afterwards. I asked if the lights were making a buzzing sound and no they were not. My ears both started ringing within less than a minute of the vaccine. I am very sensitive to many medicines but had taken the chance. Also, after a couple hours I felt twinges and nerve pinches down my shot arm and clamping in some of the fingers. Ears rang loudly the first day, I checked in with my doctor and she was worried about blood pressure but mine is always low. Wednesday it continued but a little better on and off and nerve twinges started to subside. Took blood pressure test at doctors office today, Thursday, and had my regular 120/78 BP which doctor mentioned taking to see if that was why the ringing. High and low sounds in ears today. Brother has had tinnitus for 45 years so am aware of it. I feel that standard doses of any medicines/vaccines for all people should be adjusted. I always take children’s doses of medicines. Don’t know what to do. I have a lot of nerve problems and arthritis in my neck and shoulders so it is probably hitting my weak spots. Is this a severe allergic reaction? Yes. If they gave me less dose of the second shot maybe I would do or longer between shots but it definitely is flaring up while I am typing this and when you feel agitated. Next shot scheduled for April 2oth. ??? My kids want me to have the vaccine. I am 65 and not sure I want to spend the next years this way but I don’t want the chance of a bad case of Covid either. Doctor did not have an answer or knowledge of this reaction only to see if it subsides in a week or two to decide if I don’t want shot 2. I will have to see if they are still ringing before I can decide or ask them to give me half a shot portion or give me a few more weeks before shot 2? I may go see a neurologist. Try to calm yourself to regulate the ringing a little if you can. Ginger tea helped me relax and warm neck compress helped me sleep.
Getting innoculated was the absolute worst thing that ever happened in my entire life. I got this condition from hell called Tinnitus a few days after. constant buzz that never stops. Never had it before. ANd it is not really something I associate with my ears. it comes from inside my brain. I dont drink. But I decided to drink to see if alcohol would make it less severe, it made it worse. COffee also makes it worse. I am seeing an neurologist soon. i want to try opioids. If stimulants make it worse will tranquilizer’s like opioids make it less bad? I am now experimenting with everything. I may also do cannabis as much as I hate that stuff. desperation. One under percent result of inoculation with Moderna. I now know two other people who said they got ringing in the ear just like me after the vaccine. The vaccine from hell.
Anxiety meds are the only thing that takes my tinnitus away. Unfortunately, my PCP only gave me a week’s supply. 😪 I have had tinnitus since my first Moderna Vaccine. Feb 17th.
Sasan – I am so sorry. I’ve had horrible tinnitus 2 years due to Ototoxic drugs and it gets worse if I take another med — very loud. I have taken Klonopin all of my life that suppresses my grand mal seizures. My doctor put me on that, and it helps me in that I can get more than 2 hrs. of sleep at night. I use the Klonopin and wake up every 2 hrs but I go back to sleep. I saw that someone else here further up in the thread takes it (generic – called Clonazepam). If your dr. will prescribe it, it may calm you down and help you to sleep. Sadly, drs. don’t understand tinnitus. Usually no one can tell you why you got it, nor do they seem especially concerned. There’s an audiologist from the American Tinnitus Association who got tinnitus (from a loud concert) who said he had it 5 days and he was never so terrified in his life. His name is Dr. DiSogra (he’s now retired). But he said it gave him such terror and an appreciation for what tinnitus sufferers endure. Lucky for him, his went away. I will never take another vaccine in my life since 2019 or another drug. And now that I’m getting older and things are going wrong, I fear I am going to need meds to deal with them. Please see if you can get some Klonopin. And I have a great therapist, do the relaxation exercises, etc. YouTube is a very resourceful place. I went to see the audiologist to the NASA astronauts. She and I decided I needed hearing aids that pipe in masking sounds to cover my high-pitched loud tinnitus, and they help so much. But it doesn’t help with the constant terror/PTSD I now have from this condition. Be careful about what meds you take. Look up “ototoxic drugs.” That is what caused mine. All the best to you.
P.S Here’s Dr. Sigora’s interview on audio.

Sasan-
Read my prior posts. Total hearing loss in left ear. After reading about so many cases of very severe Tinnitus, I’m thinking maybe I’m lucky, at least I don’t have the agony of the constant bussing or ringing!
Got moderna shot on 3-9 and 24 hrs later had a hissing noise in both ears. waking up sometimes its not present but gets going soon after. today..day 17 it seemed way better. Hoping this is a trend for healing. I am 65..male..hypertensive and stressed from not getting about, like everyone else. Its still there but a lot less loud. Relaxing helps to quell it. And also keeping busy. I will check back and keep you abreast of my hearing. Btw I eat well and drink a fair amount of water to keep hydrated and flushed.
LIFE IS MISERABLE. THE VA GAVE ME THE MODERNA MARCH 13 IN MY LEFT ARM. March 18th I felt I had a head cold and my left ear couldn’t hear. My earbuds work perfectly but I can’t hear the left at full volume and the right I can hear with almost low volume. Today, March 26, my headaches are gone but still can’t hear from my left ear and it feels like a two pound weight is hanging from my ear canal. It physically hurts.
I am 63 I received the Pfizer vaccine March 12th and I now have a severe increase in my original mild tinnitus starting a day or so afterwards. Did not realize how this was related until seeing all the posts.
I do not know how I will cope with this if it does not subside. Second shot is scheduled in a week. I have no idea what to do.
Will see my pcp soon but ent has been no help in the past. They Basically say learn to live with it and pay when you leave.
Thank you to everyone who has posted.
Knowing that you are not alone is a help
A couple days after the Moderna shot I got severe tinnitus in my left ear (injection side). I have had tinnitus off and on for the last few years, but it got much worse after the first shot. I had a hard time sleeping last night but when I woke up this morning I did some neck stretches and massage my upper back on the corner of a wall and felt a small improvement. Directly after that I took a long warm shower and when I came out of the shower the tinnitus had virtually disappeared. Now later in the day the tinnitus has come back although far milder than before this morning. In the past I have just tried to keep as calm as I can and focus on the noises in my environment and not the ringing in my ears, this usually helps. Really hoping this is a temporary increase in volume and I go back to baseline soon. 50/50 on whether I’ll get the second dose. Still three weeks until I have to make that decision.
One more thing to add, sometimes when I am in complete silence and the ringing in my ears is there I’ll rub my fingers together very close to my ears so I can hear the sound of the friction of my fingers (like when people jokingly say they are playing a tiny violin but all they are doing is rubbing their index finger and thumb together), which temporarily drowns out the ringing. When I take my fingers away from my ears I try to remember the Sound of the friction of my fingers and try to the best of my ability to not remember the sound of the ringing. This usually helps, albeit temporarily. Not sure why this helps me, but this whole situation is rather strange to begin with.
Thanks for sharing Ryan, did you end up going back for the 2nd shot? If so, how’d it go?
I started with loud ringing in my ears about 24 hrs after the J&J vacinne, not quite as loud after a week but still bad enough to wake me up at night.
This is just my opinion, but the majority of the doctors are not going to say they think tinnitus or hearing loss are related to the vaccine. Every single doctor I know — even my friends who are doctors — believe these vaccines are essential. They don’t want to hear about side effects nor do they have an open mind about vaccines in general. I could show them this thread, and they would all say that you did not get tinnitus or hearing loss from the vaccine. But time will tell if your health is not restored (which I pray it will be).
In the meantime, you’ll never hear about these side effects on the TV. They are all pushing these vaccines — doctors, the press, the govt.
Dr. Neil Bauman who is a contributor to the American Tinnitus Association has a blog. He NEVER takes any flu shots. Here is one of his blogs — read the people’s comments below his artcle. They sound like many of the comments here. You have to wonder WHY doctors/PCPs do not warn us that flu shots/immunizations of any type can be ototoxic. Even if it’s a small chance, we should be told.

Got first moderna shot. Had itching in my left ear the next day. Day 3, I woke up with ringing in my left ear and diminished hearing in both ears. It was hard to hear people talking (like hearing underwater), but dogs barking was horribly painful!
I went to dr this morning. She said my tubes were completely blocked. She told me to take Flonase type spray and also a decongestant, the variety they sell behind the counter, not in front of it. She also recommended lots of fluids. I did the spray and have been taking the decongestant tabs throughout the day. After 2 days of ringing and fearing I was losing my hearing, I’m happy to say this evening things seem to be improving. The ringing has diminished significantly and my hearing is improving.
I do have seasonal allergies, mostly runny nose. So taking a decongestant was never something I would have considered. Could be a coincidence, but never had this before and it started 3 days after vaccine, and there were no other unexplained variables that i can think of. Best of luck guys. Hope this helps someone else.
I developed buzzing (tinnitus) in my ear hours after receiving my first Moderna shot on March 23rd. Through researching I see many people are having this same outcome. This buzzing is extremely annoying. I called my physician last week and waiting for a call back. I don’t know if I want the second shot at this point.
If Tinnitus was a problem for you, make sure that you entered it into the VAERS website! https://vaers.hhs.gov/esubhelp.html?nameID=patientInfo
Otherwise, it will seem like a lesser problem than it really is. I took the 1st Pfizer shot on 3/17/2021 and 4 days later noticed that my low intensity, high frequency tinnitus had increased dramatically. Also, it hasn’t gone down much at all since then. I’ll be praying for everyone that wrote in that we’ll get relief.
Deb-
You are so right on! Although, my ENT believes it was. We are not to think for ourselves, follow the science and the data until it doesn’t fit, then we will say something else. I agree we have the right to know, look at the risk/benefit, then choose!
I had my first moderna shot 3/17. Had some dizziness, headache and tired one full day after. Few days later ringing in ear and some pressure right side. Its pollen season here in FL but never had this before! Praying it subsides and will not be getting 2nd shot. I feel my system reacted enough already to do its job. *(hashimoto’s, skin cancer /dsap and some allergy issue’s)
Cheryl –
Please keep us updated. No change here, one week later.
I had Covid19 back in October 2020. My cold and flu-like symptoms were very mild, but I had complete loss of taste and smell and ringing in my ears. Those symptoms started on day 1. My taste and smell are mostly back, around 80%, but the ringing in my ears has not gotten better.
I’ve seen my family doctor 3 times, an audiologist, and an ENT. None of them could diagnose a problem, and my hearing seems to be unaffected. I’m 37 years old, don’t have underlying health problems, and I’m in probably the best overall shape of my life.
I have an appointment to get vaccinated this Wednesday, but after finding this website I am now very hesitant. I started doing more research after hearing about the Texas Roadhouse CEO sadly ending his life due largely in part to tinnitus from Covid.
I don’t know if getting the vaccine is worth risking making my tinnitus worse. I never had tinnitus before covid. If it gets worse I don’t know how I’d deal with it. Are there any reports out there about people getting tinnitus from actual covid, and then getting vaccinated?
I got my J and J vaccine last weds and have had pain in my right ear for 3 days now. I’ve never had ear problems…ever
About 13 days after my second Moderna shot I developed tinnitus. The first night it was so bad I was up until 4 am before I finally became exhausted and fell asleep. The second and third nights were slightly better. After 5 days of this I called my doctor they prescribed me a decongestant and Flonase which provided little to no relief. They told me to try it for 5 days so we’ll see what happens. They also prescribed clonazepam to help with getting sleep at night and when it kicks in it does help me fall asleep. I’m on day 8 of this and it is miserable. I dread bedtime because I fear the battle with the ringing in my ears that will again keep me awake. It has led to a lot of stress and anxiety. I have never had tinnitus prior to this. I am 52 years old and have always been in good to great health.
For tinnitus start taking multi-vitamin with ZINC. In addition, also eat foods high in ZINC daily. ( Don’t take a Zinc only vitamin, but just a multi-vitamin with Zinc. ) Minerals like ZINC, MAGNESIUM, SELENIUM, etc. take time to build up versus a water soluble vitamin. ( IE. It takes longer to dissolve a rock pebble vs a water soluble substance like vitamin B or Vitamin C. ) It will take some weeks but it will start repairing the tinnitus over time. Good luck.
Writing from UK. Reporting severe tinnitus starting a few day after first Pfizer vaccination. Have seen ENT consultant who cannot see any reason for me to have developed it and has ordered am ENT scan. I have done a yellow card report https://www.gov.uk/drug-safety-update/suspect-an-adverse-reaction-yellow-card-it
My father died of Covid and I am high risk but this tinnitus is so severe I cannot arrange another vaccination until I can accertain if there is any other cause as its odd that it started within days of my first shot. reading the other comments there does seem to be a connection.
Brian, please continue to research and write about post Covid vaccine related tinnitus and hearing loss. There are many people experiencing these side effects and it needs to addressed by the medical community. Thank you.
Just wanted to register another case.
JNJ vaccine at end of April 2021 caused various side effects some severe.
Seemed like all passed after two weeks except for ears…clogged feeling, swollen canal, ringing/swooshing sound….so Tinnitus
Received J & J on March 22, 2021, 98 days ago. After 48 hours, started experiencing tinnitus, ears felt full and clogged, pain in brain, extreme fatigue, slight nausea. Went to ER and was told they do not report vaccine side effects, after a over $10,000 bill, they came up with nothing. Saw ENT. He said he had seen several Moderna victims with tinnitus but I was his first J & J. Tested hearing. Stated I had a “unique” hearing loss that he has only seen with Covid vaccine victims. For me, I was unaware of the high frequency loss and still am not aware. However, the tinnitus is driving me crazy and I cannot fathom giving COVID vaccines to children! I have not missed one day for illness in over 27 years and now I am so fatigued and nauseated, I can only function a couple hours a day. Shortly, after the vaccine, my regular physician ran several tests. It was interesting to note that I suddenly have Epstein Barr IGG of over 750. It is my understanding that this is an opportunist virus that attacks you when your immune system breaks down but otherwise is dormant in the majority of our population. I believe that the COVID vaccine compromised my immune system. Will I recover from any of this? Who knows?
After contracting Covid, I was left with tinnitus, a pressure, and a painful hypersensitivity to sounds; all in my left ear. ENT, scans and test indicate that everything was fine. The pressure and sound hypersensitivity has completely resolved (after about 2 months). I am still left with the tinnitus, although it seems to have faded a little (after physical therapy on my jaw, neck and balance related exercises). I am very scared of getting vaccinated. What are the chances of it becoming worse for someone like me who has been left with tinnitus from the virus itself? Thanks, James.
Thanks for sharing, James. From what I have heard, tinnitus remains a somewhat mysterious phenomenon involving potentially multiple parts of the hearing system and the brain. Patient reports vary widely with some people apparently unbothered by it while others reporting it has a significant impact on their quality of life. There are many reports, however, of people that get better over time — even people with long-term chronic tinnitus. There is a growing amount of helpful information on the internet on the condition online. Would suggest steering clear of reports from people who are stuck and find individuals who have made significant progress. Hope it continues to fade for you. Sounds like you are on the right track.
I have found these tips help me with my tinnitus. Take Vitamin B complex. Do not put headphones or earphones on ever again. Listen to your car radio at a low level. No more concert levels! Read the side effects of all meds if it causes tinnitus. I quit Pepto-Bismol and it helped. Don’t take a nap with the TV or radio on. Fan noise is fine. Don’t take diet soda or foods/drinks with aspartame or sucralose anymore…even in small amounts. Sweet and Low is fine. Not sure about Monkfruit or Stevia though. Maybe, maybe not. No more hunting or target practice. Also, there are videos on Youtube on this subject you should look at for some relief.
PRAC (Pharmacovigilance Risk Assessment Committee) has officially announced that Tinnitus and Dizziness is now a side effect that can be linked to the Janssen (Johnson and Johnson) vaccine. More details on that in this good blog post on it – https://tinnitusandyou.com/tinnitus-after-covid-vaccine/.I believe this is eventually going to happen with Moderna and Pfizer as well. They are probably just waiting on more data to come to a consensus.
