Founded in 1973 as a subsidiary of the French oil firm Elf Aquitaine, Sanofi has steadily expanded through mergers and acquisitions. In 1999, it merged with Synthélabo to create Sanofi-Synthélabo. In 2004, the company merged with Aventis to become Sanofi-Aventis. The company reverted its name back to Sanofi in 2011. In recent years, the company has pursued a series of bolt-on acquisitions, including six in 2021 to bolster its involvement in immunology, oncology and vaccines. In March 2022, Sanofi entered into an antibody collaboration pact with IGM Biosciences that could be worth up to $6 billion. —BB
