Founded in 1849, Pfizer ranks among the most well known pharmaceutical companies in the world. The New York City–based firm has been in the limelight for its COVID-19 vaccine development work with partner BioNTech, but Pfizer became a smaller player during the pandemic. In November, Pfizer completed its divestiture of Upjohn, which merged with Mylan to form Viatris (see No. 23). Since CEO Dr. Albert Bourla took the reins of Pfizer in 2019, the company has become more nimble and focused on R&D. The approach appears to be working during the pandemic. Pfizer said in February that it expects to sell $15 billion in COVID-19 vaccine doses in 2021. By May, it had boosted its estimate for COVID-19 revenue to $26 billion. Pfizer is also developing an oral antiviral for COVID-19. Strong performers include Vyndamax (tafamidis), Prevnar 13, Xeljanz (tofacitinib), Eliquis (developed jointly with Bristol-Myers Squibb) and Ibrance (palbociclib). The firm also intends to use its experience developing an mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccine to develop new treatments for diseases ranging from cancer to HIV. –BB
